Sump pump failure — what to do

A failed sump pump during heavy rain or a thaw can flood a basement. Know what to do right away.

Do this now

  1. Confirm the pump is unplugged and check the outlet and fuse.
  2. Manually lift and lower the float to see if it starts.
  3. Use a back-up pump or bail water if flooding is under way.

Don't do this

  • Don't assume it's working just because it's plugged in.
  • Don't let water reach electrical outlets or the panel.

High — if water is rising, act now and call for help.

Limit the damage

  • Unplug appliances in the basement and move valuables up.
